So in my first post on weird ads for hospitality jobs, I mentioned both a position catching chickens and being a “glassy” here. What I found hilarious about the “glassy” job was that it required a resume and preferably previous “experience”. I am not mocking the job at all as it is an integral part of running a bar smoothly but come on, it’s not exactly really hard nor technical. The Aussie slang for a glass collector is what makes me laugh and requiring a resume blows my mind…really, who cares what schools you went to when all you do is collect empty glasses and clean them in a bar?
Anyway, I found yet another add for “glassies” but thank goodness this bar has simpler expectations – they just want applicants to ring the bar and better yet, no experience is necessary. Maybe I should apply for this job just to see what a real “glassy” does.
Hey, I’m interested in becoming a “Glassie”. Where do I send my resume? lol
If you didn’t tell me what exactly was the job description of a “Glassie”, I’d assume it’s either a glass blower (an art) or a window washer.
Of course we all know the equivalent job title of a “Glassie” here in the states is a BARBACK.
I’m not sure which one sounds more – or less glamorous, though. lol

Pomai, I forgot about the term “barback”. Yeah, not sure which sounds better – they are both unglamorous sounding…

Ok, I have been a glassy for 3 years, and you do way more than collect glasses. Most people think its an easy job. its not. Yes you collect glasses, you stock the bar, you make sure the bar has ice. you clean up when people spew, all sort of misc stuff. Im my time as a glassy t one venue, i have seen so many people come and go it aint funny. And the correct name i have found out is BAR USEFUL. yes this is a bit of a rant, but just rember when your at a night club, the reason that you have a clean glass in your hand or a fresh botle of beer, is cause of a glassy. we are the back bone of any pub/club.

Sorry Guy, I didn’t mean to mock the job. I found the term used for the job position more funny than the actual job. Bar Useful is sooo much better sounding. Glassy is like a busboy in a restaurant, you’re right, you are the backbone of any pub/club. I just didn’t realise that there was a separate position for that job – I always assumed that the bar staff did that as part of the job. Sorry again, no disrepect was meant.
